How to Create a Short Link: A Step-by-Step Guide and Things to Watch For

The steps to create a short link from a long address, tips for copying and sharing, click tracking and common mistakes. An example flow with Kısaltıcı.

Sharing a long web address is a hassle: it breaks in messages, looks messy in a bio and invites typing mistakes. A short link solves this. Here is how to create one from start to finish.

1. Prepare the long address

Copy the full address of the page you want to share from your browser’s address bar. Make sure it starts with https:// and that the page opens. If you will track a campaign, you can prepare the address with UTM tags first.

2. Paste it into the shortening service

On Kısaltıcı, after starting a plan and signing in, paste the address into the box on the main screen and choose to shorten it. If you like, you can create a QR code for the same address, and on the Professional and Business plans you can write the end of the address yourself.

3. Copy and test

  • Copy the short link that is created.
  • Open it in a new tab and check that it goes to the right page.
  • Open it on mobile too: does the page look fast and tidy?

4. Share

  • Social media bios and post descriptions
  • Email, messages and newsletters
  • As a QR code on printed materials

5. Track the clicks

On each link’s own page you see the total clicks, the last click and the distribution over time. If you create separate short links for different channels, you can easily compare which channel gets more interest.

Common mistakes

  • Sharing the link without testing it.
  • Using the same short link in every channel and blurring the measurement.
  • Copying the destination wrongly: a short link’s destination cannot be changed later, so you would need to create a new link.
  • Pointing to a temporary page that will expire.
