7 Criteria for Choosing a Link Shortener: Which Service Should You Use?
Learn seven criteria to check when choosing a link shortening service: security, continuity, measurement, QR codes, custom links and price.
There are many link shortening services. Even if they all seem to do the same job, the differences can have big consequences for printed materials, campaigns or your brand’s reputation. Look at these seven criteria when choosing.
1. Continuity: how long do links live?
If a short link is printed on a business card or poster, it needs to work for years. Check that the service keeps links working until the user deletes them and does not set a time limit.
2. Security and abuse monitoring
A service that monitors for phishing and harmful content and offers abuse reporting protects both you and your visitors. A domain’s reputation depends on the care taken here.
3. Click measurement
Check information such as total clicks, the distribution over time and, if needed, how far back the history goes. Measurement is the basis for improving your campaigns.
4. QR code support
If you use printed materials, a service that can create QR codes and offers customization such as color, shape and logo makes your job easier. When the QR code points to the short link, scans are counted.
5. Custom links
For brand recognition, being able to write the end of the address yourself can matter. A custom link means memorable, trust-building addresses.
6. Transparent pricing
- See the plan limits (daily links, QR codes, statistics period) clearly.
- Learn the trial period and cancellation terms in advance.
- Check payment security and invoice details.
7. Support and legal transparency
Choose a provider that clearly publishes who runs the service, its privacy policy and its terms of use. If contact details and refund terms are unclear, you will struggle when a problem comes up.
